FarmVille is big business

We all know the annoying (well, I think they are) posts we get on our Facebook accounts when one of our friends finds a “lonely cow” on his farm in the free online game “FarmVille”, but wether you like it or not, it’s big business.
So big in fact, that Zynga, the company behind this and other games (Mafia Wars, FishVille, …) is valued at a whopping $4 billion!
In a recent article, Business Insider does the math for us based on an issue price of about $12 per share.

Who would have thought that these type of games would become so huge, both in numbers of people playing the game – FarmVille has about 80 million active accounts – but also in the number of dollars it is making.
And it’s doing a great job at it, by cleverly giving you the edge over your Facebook friends if you buy special in-game items with real-world dollars.

So, love it or hate it, it’s one of the most lucrative internet business models currently on the web…
